Part of this misperception is due to the application of a deficit model of autism that considers autistic people as incapable of displaying social agency. By pathogising such behaviour, one could unduly be blunting attempts at autistic self-advocacy. The label of PDA represents the medicalising and pathologising of behaviours that from an outsider perspective seem to be differentiated from what is deemed capable by autistic people, but could be seen as the behaviours of an autistic person who has gained a modicum of normative social skills and is simply asserting their agency. The avoidance of demands is interactional in nature, and much like a lack of social reciprocity cannot be located solely in the mind of any one individual (Milton, 2012a). Such behaviours arise from any number of transactions between the individual and environment. It will no doubt lead to treatments that try and stop such behaviours (which couldīe read as a form of self-advocacy and the gaining of skills). In essence, such protests are perceived as the fault of pathology inherent in the individual mind rather than a conflicting interaction (much like ‘theory of mind’). The PDA narrative suggests that those who gain some social interaction skills and assert their needs through avoidance of imposed demands are pathological. It is deemed pathological due the distaste of those doing the perceiving and their idealisation of cultural and psychological norms. The PDA narrative presents what is perfectly rational behaviour from the viewpoint of the autistic person displaying it when faced with highly stressful situations, as not as a consequence of ‘choice’ (whatever that may be) but as a pathological response. The labelling of the expressions of autistic agency as pathological is in itself disempowering. By pathologising such behaviour, one could unduly be blunting attempts at autistic self-advocacy. This paper concludes by arguing that the label of PDA represents the medicalising and pathologising of behaviours that from an outsider perspective seem to be differentiated from what is deemed capable by autistic people, but could be seen as the behaviours of an autistic person who has gained a modicum of normative social skills and is simply asserting their agency. PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) or Persistent Drive for Autonomy When faced with a demand (even a really minor one), PDAers can have extreme reactions. PDA causes someone to avoid demands and expectations for the sole purpose of remaining in control. The core of PDA is an anxiety-driven need for autonomy. PDA is not a formal diagnosis in the DSM-5 or ICD-10, and it is not well known in the U.S., though it is widely acknowledged in the U.K. I prefer this name because it is less judgmental, but also because it focuses less on demand avoidance (which can be caused by an endless number of things) and more on the core issue: the drive for autonomy. So let’s talk about the concept of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), though I prefer Tomlin Wilding’s interpretation: Pervasive Drive for Autonomy. (PDF) Rational (Pathological) Demand Avoidance: what it is not, what it could be & what it does. Other RDA traits can viewed as a different way of being, therefore they are not necessarily a defect. The high anxiety levels and demand avoidance behaviours can be seen as an interactive process, with being labelled “demand avoidance behaviour” as disablism due to the RDAer vulnerability to internalising (Eaton 2018b Trundle et al 2017).The demand avoidance behaviour is how a RDAer attempts to regulate and adapt to the high anxiety.(2020) – Woods – 2020 – Child and Adolescent Mental Health – Wiley Online Library Commentary: Demand Avoidance Phenomena, a manifold issue? Intolerance of uncertainty and anxiety as explanatory frameworks for extreme demand avoidance in children and adolescents – a commentary on Stuart et al. This discussion provides tentative support for monotropism autism theory and the growing body of research indicating that DAP may not be developmentally persistent (a high rate of persons not meeting clinical threshold into adulthood). In this commentary, I attempt to contextualise the recent article, Intolerance of Uncertainty and anxiety (Stuart et al., 2019) within wider discourses. There is much ongoing controversy around the construct. Demand Avoidance Phenomena (DAP) is a neutral term for Pathological Demand Avoidance, which is sometimes conceptualised as an autism subtype. The Photos app on Mac has come a long way since it was iPhoto back in the day. Hoping I do not run into any of the song, tag and app freezing problems that have been mentioned in reviews. Although annoying ads are not an issue, they're not really a problem.Īlthough this app was once great, it is not nearly as good as it used to be. After editing the files individually, I had to go back and update them. However, each file is still labeled without a track number. I had to go back multiple times in order to rename every file within the album. It should work just as well as in the past. Sometimes I'm not sure what album the song comes from, and sometimes I'm not even aware. It's a problem that I solve by printing random characters. There are a lot of ads on it that take up the entire screen, and force you to view only a small portion. It does exactly what it's supposed to and has an extensive set of tools for editing your tags. My 4/5 rating comes from the fact that I discovered a bug in the app when I tried to edit multiple tracks simultaneously and set them up on the same album. Although I don't have to edit each one, it is very useful for adding multiple tracks to an album. I wish that I could use cover art in a different dimension ratio than 1. It's also much more efficient and easier than manually cropping the art. For others it is a different experience without all the art. I'm not always able to access a computer or know how to tag music in that manner. It was something I attempted before, and it corrupted the art I wanted to create.Įxcellent app. It looks like the team at Techland has a busy year ahead of them, and we have plenty to look forward to in one of the best Xbox zombie games. The strategy announced by Larry Fink will not change BlackRock’s profile overnight, but it is indeed a start to reallocating assets to less carbon-emitting companies. BlackRock will also launch a new impact investment fund and expand the range of funds invested in low-carbon activities. Banks and insurance companies have already started this movement in recent years. The rest of this sum is made up of indexation, which mirrors stock market indices.īlackrock plans to stop investing in companies that derive more than 25% of their income from the production of thermal coal. These assets represent $1.8 trillion of the company’s $6.9 trillion in managed assets. A provision which mainly concerns its active management, that is to say those client for which Blackrock can really choose where to invest. At the same time, BlackRock plans to communicate more frequently on its voting activity, which will make it possible to check whether its commitment is being respected.īlackRock also plans to increase the share of sustainable investments in its portfolios. "Given the preparatory work already accomplished and the increase in investment risks linked to sustainable development, we will be increasingly disposed to vote against management and board directors when companies are not making sufficient progress on sustainability-related disclosures ," they said. The BlackRock executive committee announced that it wants the companies in which it invests to communicate their strategy for reducing global warming below 2☌. Blackrock explained its past votes by stating it was a result of ongoing discussions with company leaders to encourage them to transform and the need to give such companies time to organize. They also announce a new, more engaged voting policy. First, the letters recall BlackRock’s membership in the Climate Action 100+ investor initiative. Letters from Larry Fink and the executive committee seem to respond. They stressed that BlackRock voted against a majority of the climate-friendly resolutions. American NGO Majority Action demonstrated this in a recent study on voting trends during company general meetings. Nevertheless, with more than $6.9 trillion in assets under management, this financial giant holds significant power which it does not always wield. This letter arrives in a context where BlackRock is increasingly recognized for its weak action on climate. “If ten percent of global investors do so – or even five percent – we will witness massive capital shifts,” declared Fink. BlackRock client investors are also worried, and an increasing number are asking to integrate climate risk into their portfolios. According to him, climate change represents a “a much more structural, long-term crisis” than all the economic crises encountered during his 40-year career. “We believe that sustainable investing is the strongest foundation for client portfolios going forward”, wrote Fink. Larry Fink explained why, and the executive committee announced how. Its purpose was to show the will of the American company to transform its practices and make sustainable investment the standard for BlackRock. This year’s letter came with a little surprise as it was accompanied by a second letter written by members of the executive committee. The annual letter by the CEO of BlackRock Larry Fink is an anticipated event for clients of the world's largest asset manager. I probably should’ve disclosed this earlier, but I haven’t eaten an actual watermelon since taking both my first and last bite of a slice when I was a kid, so I have to give credit where credit is due to Mountain Dew here, as I actually Major Melon this despite my disdain for the fruit that inspired it.Īs a result, the soda managed to earn my coveted seal of approval, so if you like watermelon as much as I loathe it, you’re in for a treat. However, that’s not really a bad thing, as the watermelon is a subtle but noticeable complement to the Mountain Dew flavor you know and love and manages to avoid falling into the sickly sweet trap that a lot of other products that take a similar approach tend to fall victim to. With that said, I’d argue “Major Melon” is a bit of a misnomer, as the fruit the bottle says it’s “charged” with doesn’t exactly dominate the palate. It’s safe to say this soda doesn’t have that problem, as the bright pink elixir calls to mind the watermelon Bubblicious I used to cram into the back of my baseball pants during my Little League days. Mountain Dew’s original formula is usually described as “citrusy,” but much like the drinks that supposedly taste like grape but have an essence that has come to be simply known as “purple,” the soda is one of those products that’s hard to compare to anything else out there (the brand’s official website even refers to it as “green magic” as opposed to any real, actual flavor). As BroBible’s resident Taster of Things, I was very intrigued following the reveal, so I was pleasantly surprised when a package containing a bottle showed up at my doorstep over the weekend courtesy of the kind folks at Mountain Dew.Īs someone who spent my teenage years subsisting on way too much Code Red and orders Baja Blast in the largest size Taco Bell has to offer whenever I hit up the chain, I was curious to see how it measures up and conducted a taste test to do exactly that. However, that all changed last week when we were introduced to Major Melon, a watermelon-flavored twist on its flagship offering. 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/ - Mtn Dew will showcase new Mtn Dew Major Melon and Mtn Dew Major Melon Zero Sugar - the beverage brand's first permanent. Operation Major Melon Winners Drawings:- The random drawings will select the winner from all the valid entries received before the close date of the entry period and they will be contacted by phone call or email after the declaration of the contest result. It was a bit surprising to see those products enter Mountain Dew’s portfolio when you consider it hadn’t added a permanent member to its soda roster since White Out joined the lineup all the way back in 2010. This ambiguity of form, rendered through a deep understanding of the narrative and haptic power of translucently rendered color, suspends the image somewhere between abstract composition and storytelling, creating interior, psychological spaces evoking memory and place.”Įkasala says she “is always learning,” and you can see it while tracing her career. “In Terry Ekasala's abstract paintings, perceivable subjects - figures, landscapes, interiors, objects - are evoked, yet never fully revealed. When Ekasala won the Vermont Prize this summer, Chrissie Isles, a curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, offered this assessment of her work: There’s something like movement contained in the canvasses. In works such as “Air I Breathe,” an oil piece full of blues and greens that evokes hills and hot-air balloons, or “I See You Everywhere,” an acrylic one depicting a ghastly white figure, layered brushstrokes add physical and conceptual depth to the final image. And each time brush meets canvas a piece evolves bit by bit. She often turns a painting upside down or on its side, looking for a new perspective on the ideas still forming across the linen seams. Sometimes Ekasala can take months to finish. “If I come up with an image really quick, and there’s not enough paint on the canvas, I can’t leave it like that,” she said. So she daubs and swirls and slashes until, eventually, images start to evolve from the mass of colors and textures, and it all comes together to form the final work. “The only thing I am really sure of when I start is mixing the paint,” she said. But for a few years now, she has stuck strictly to oil paints on linen canvases and acrylic on paper.Ĭourtesy Terry Ekasala's Statues and Shadows in the Garden, made with oil paints on a linen canvas in 2022.Įkasala tends to work on multiple pieces at once, something dictated by her style and mediums: Oil paints have a slow-drying nature, and she likes to play with layers and transparency. For a while, she used acrylic paint and mixed media, incorporating plaster or sand into the image-making. “Every single solitary time I’m scared to death - I don’t know what I’m doing,” she said, half-tongue-in-cheek.Įach painting starts differently, Ekasala said, from the materials used to the image on the canvas. What comes next is a process based on not having any process at all. Then she stretches sheets of linen over the frame, fastening them with rabbit skin glue and tightening up the fabric, before priming the canvas with several coats of gesso. She builds the frame of the canvas, sometimes up to 72 by 84 inches, from wood. Some 30 years into her career, she’s refined her style in the Kingdom quiet.Įach canvas she uses, Ekasala constructs by hand. There she spends hours in a solitary retrofitted barn overlooking the mountain, a place that cultivates creation and expression, she said, “an anchor in my art.” One day she felt an itch to head stateside and later on a whim moved in 2001 to the Northeast Kingdom, where she’s lived and worked ever since. She started in earnest in the ’80s, living and painting in a Miami studio before moving to Belleville, a neighborhood in Paris, and spending several years as an artist in the French capital. “It’s all paying off now,” she added soon after. “I’m proud of myself,” Ekasala said, in her sticking with painting all these years and dedicating as much time as she can to being in the studio.
